Well, I think there are at least two movies deserving this title. These are Terminator 4 and Transformers 2. What do you think?
P.S. To moderators: sorry for possible writing to a wrong category but I didn't find any other category for general chat.

Hmm I think it's fair to add Star Trek to that list even though most of the fanboys disliked it.

I never liked Transformers myself, haven't watched the second yet. The CGI though I will say is very good.
I heard Star trek was extremely good as well, haven't seen it yet.
I haven't watched wolverine either, I heard it wasn't as good as it was hyped up to be.
Terminator was pretty good.

Transformers 2 and Terminator 4 were the worst two movies i saw in the past 5 years.
Fucking terrible
SO HORRIBLE
Terminator 4 had the worst writing ever, the acting was terrible and the director must have been snorting way too much coke
Transformers RoTF was just plain the worst excuse for a movie ever. The first was bearable but this was just terrible.

The best movie is Star Trek, if you're counting from Jan 1 '09. It slaughters the lore, but its a fun action movie with coherent dialog.
T4 slaughtered the lore, and wasn't nearly as cool.
XO:W slaughtered the lore, and the acting was crap.
Trans2 was visually impressive, but way too long and convoluted. And the acting blew.
Hangover was funny, but no one takes comedies seriously (pun).
Potential competitors to Star Trek are UP, Taken, and Watchmen.

OP, did you pick the two worst and dumbest movies of the year to illustrate what we "shouldn't" be talking about?... Well I guess T4 was just like any other movie but transformers2?...
If we're talking about geek movies, I'll definitely go for Star Trek (fanboys bla bla bla... fanboys are never happy anyways, that's because they're fanboys :p). My friends and I were really shocked by how good of a movie it is. Awesome surprise.
When it comes to animations, for now Ice age3 was great (better than monsters versus aliens), but I expect Up to to be even better. It sounds extremely entertaining.
There are some great movies comming up though. Stuff like Public Ennemies, Inglorious Basterds (friend of mine saw it already, it's fantastic apparently), Sherlock Holmes and 2012 (both in november). I expect those four movies to be the best "big budget" movies this year based on what I've seen, but I hope i'll be surprised by something else :p. On a side note I'm also a bit fed up of big hollywood movies. I love some independant films, especially from europe or east asia.
For the time being I'd just go for Star Trek, but that's really because the summer is young :)

Transformers 2: I liked this one... popcorn flick... I didn't go to see acting, chicks or storyline, I went to see big ass robots and explosions... I got that, I'm happy...
Terminator 4: Meh... better than Wolverine...
Wolverine: Meh...
Hangover: Meh...
Borüno: Better than hangover (I like the whole "hidden" camera deal)
With that said... My pick so far is Star Trek.

Well yeah, with transformers you get what you expect. It's definitely a pretty straightforward movie. But you also aren't expecting much when you go to watch that movie, so it's pretty hard to be disapointed. I think that's why it's hard to be objective too, but that doesn't make it a good movie though. (imo! ;))

I don't even like comedy but this is taking my bet...The rest was just meh.

I'm a huge fan of the S.H. stories and I think they're going to ruin it. Too much comedy (stupid) and not enough of the real S.H. That being said - I also hate jude law.

Since Dsquid reminded me of it.
I'm going to have to say Taken was one of my most favourite movies ever.

The thing that bothers me the most about it is that they're making him into a superhero type character. Its not gritty detective its more beat the shit out of everyone blah blah blah.
at least theres still Avatar to look forward to.

Hmm it's too bad you hated public enemies Rainbow. I haven't seen it yet but I hope I'll like it, and I probably will considering the general atmosphere the film seems to have. I've got to agree that Moon is a great film.
Concerning Sherlock Holmes... we're talking about how good a movie is, not how much it resembles the book it was inspired from... So yeah, maybe Sherlock Holmes fans will be disapointed because it wasn't consistent enough with the books, but whatever, as long as a movie has a good script, scenario and acting you've got to give it that much credit.
Obviously I'm just using S.H. as an example. It won't be out for another few months and it could be the worst movie ever. I'm only hoping it will be good : ). And I don't really mind if it doesn't follow the books exactly, although that would be a plus since I loved them too.

The problem with Public Enemies is just that its sooooo boring and the acting isnt very good at all.

Nooo Avatar is going to be the equivalent to the cartoon as Dragonball Evolution was to its cartoon.
My vote thus far goes to Taken or Gran Torino, looking forward to Inglorious Bastards.
I am also greatly disappointed in the big name titles of the year.

i've heard transformers is terrible, and while i haven't seen it, i don't doubt michael bay added too much "KRAW! KRAW!!!!" to it. (south park, anyone?)
star trek is pretty awesome.
terminator 4 is mixed reviews from what i've heard.
hangover is funny, but no comedy about getting smashed in vegas will ever win best picture.
how about UP? it's a pretty funny movie, and even though it's animated, has a lot of stuff going for it (namely, that it was made my Pixar, who've yet to create a flopper).

Transformers 2 was VERY disappointing, it was badly plotted, had an unforgivably underused villain (no more, no less than the Transformers' version of Lucifer! but he appears for only five minutes and does little but get killed in a particularly inglorious way) and the action was shot so fast and in SUCH a confusing manner that you couldn't tell what's going on and the animation didn't have a chance to shine (and the animators and concept artists, not the actors, are the true stars in this kind of movie). And there was too much US army and hardly any robots in the final battle. Whatever good bits the movie had were too few and far between to save the rest. I did love the forest battle though.
I guess I'd have to vote for Star Trek as well.

It is very hard to decide.
I love the Hangover. I was not quiet at all because I was just laughing at everything. I loved Taken. It was just awesome! I also loved Star Trek. I'm not a fanboy but it's such an awesomely visual movie! T4 sucked...XO:W was not very good. Watchmen is another very awesome movie.
District 9 looks like it could be a contender however. However, the Scorcesse (however you spell it) "Shutter Island" could be up because of its dude. lol.
Star Trek or Hangover for now. Maybe I'll edit it.

It's not actually an anime despite what it would have you believe. :P
I dunno. The best movies I've seen this year are Up and Harry Potter... so... Up is a contender FOR SURE. But I haven't seen anything mind-blowing yet.
...but Oscar season is in like November, so we'll see what comes this way.
Public Enemies wasn't particularly bad, just kind of mediocre, and kind of the victim of a TON of hype. The only really good acting was Johnny Depp, and the script wasn't particularly impressive.

Harry Potter just didn't impress me. The first two movies were the best, as a big book fan, and after that it just plummeted with the third one. Fourth was ok but the ending was really bad. The fifth one was actually really really good. The last one, however; was just plain stupid. I mean....the main storyline seemed to be more about Ron and Lavender and Harry and Ginny and Hermoine and that whole love crap. The visuals were really good though. Maybe I just have a thing against Michael Gambon...Idk...but I definitely would not put it as a contender against other competition.

I'm surprised you didn't hate all of them (maybe the 5th the least), being a big book fan. The only good thing about the series is that the main actors are (very) slowly learning to act... I've ended up watching all of the movies because a friend of mine always drags me into it, but I feel the movies lack accuracy (despite all their best efforts) and I don't like the way they select which scenes to reinterpret. The worst thing about them, in general, is the acting though.
The fifth movie was pretty good though, especially because of Bonham Carter (bellatrix lestrange) who's a great actress imo, but I agree with you that the sixth movie was pretty boring despite many other aspects improving a lot (acting, special effects etc...).

The reason that I love the first and the second is because the director didn't exactly follow the plot line of the books...but he gave a credible replacement for all of them. The Chamber of Secrets was absolutely phenomenal. The director for the third just sucked...he killed the movie. I have no idea how people actually thought it was good, let alone the best. The fifth beat out the sixth definitely. But...enough OT ranting for me. :p And yes...Bonham Carter is the best bad guy (girl) ever. She's just so good at being crazy...even in the sixth.
I still say that it's a tie between Star Trek and Hangover....so far. :p

I actually have to say I enjoyed Terminator 4. I was absolutely never a huge fan of the Terminator series (much preferred Predator).
But when Zahn wrote a prequel I grabbed it, read it, enjoyed it, and enjoyed the movie. I don't care what kind of lore it destroyed because, quite frankly, I couldn't care any less about terminator lore. I found the characters, especially Marcus, intriguing and, all in all, I was entertained.
I enjoyed Star Trek, but to be perfectly honest, I enjoyed it less than Terminator. It had too many facial close-ups, truly strange behavior by Uhura (randomly trying to make out with Spock in the elevator after he just lost his homeworld? There are better ways to help people, especially Vulcans, overcome their grief) and the huge LUCAS MOMENT of the creatures on the ice world just turned me off.
That's not to say I didn't enjoy it. I did, and I'll buy it on Blu-Ray when it comes out. T4, though, was a war movie and a fairly interesting one at that.
Transformers 2 was exactly what it was supposed to be: giant explosions and big robots blowing the crap out of each other. I can't say I liked it as well as the first, and I can't say the first will ever be a top 25 movie for me, but hey, it was worth the price of admission so I won't complain.
