The SC chess set thread got me to thinking.

I love chess and I love SC. So I have to ponder if other SC players like chess too!

DO any of you play? If so you should make a (free) account on redhotpawn.com and play with me! Either way i would love to ask some seemingly simple questions about specific openings etc if anyone here is good at chess.

Poll attached for no reason whatsoever :D

I love chess! :D

I used to play it with my dad when I was little, but not so much anymore, so I'm not that great, especially with openings. I also have trouble actually giving a checkmate when I've all but won the game. :P

My account is Gradius. :)

I used to play some chess among other things at lunch randomly in HS when I didn't feel like going outside.

The thing is I didn't really want to "learn" it since then my friends who were most defienty not going to take the time wouldn't be fun to play with anymore ;d

So i've played a bunch but prbly still considered pretty bad. Sadly since those times are over I don't really have anyone to play with anymore and I largely prefer playing in person ( same with poker)

As a child I came first in a Chess tournament, beating people 4X my age. But I haven’t played in years...

I like chess, but i hardly play it, unless i have a lot of free time in my hands. I specially like it's non-randomness, something that cannot be said about most games.

Same as Zabimaru, I came 2nd in the county tournament when I was 14. But have played less often since. I should pick it up again one of these days. :D

I play chess regularly online, and have glass chess sets both at home and at the office.

I'd be game. I think you should also accept my challenge request so I can redeem myself.

Haha, if time permits then I’m cool with it- though our time zones might be a little bit out of sync. :p

*claps*

Well, I totally play with my uncle and dad from time to time. Still, I'm not that great and I don't know who strategies are called nor when to use them.

Here on Mex a group of people are trying to add chess as a regular class in schools. ¿Why? Because it's supposed to make people smarter and it helps them expand their memory, concentration, etc.

I'll gladly join the group as soon as I get time.

I like chess but I rarely get the chance to play. I love strategic games, though I'm seldom any good at them.

Another good game for the strategically inclined is Mancala (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mancala). It's kinda like chess from the east. It's fairly simple conceptually, but it can get pretty heated. My best friend got me hooked on it. :D

A typical mancala board.

The point is to get as many pebbles in your score pit as possible. Take the pebbles from any pit on your side, and "seed" them across the board. The stones from the last pit seeded go to you.

Lol, mancala to chess??? I dunno about that one

I played when I was younger also. I was on a team from maybe 1st to 4-th grade. I competed but never did very well, I was never very into it. I didnt understand that a game could be so defined and not-random like someone mentioned before I think. I'm still wrapping my head around what makes chess, Chess, in terms of how the game is played and how to think about the game.

The similarity lay in the strategic thinking and planning your moves ahead; trying to outwit you opponent. Beyond that, though, they are two very different games, I admit. =P

Are you saying mancala is a good game, or...? =P

Haha, done. Should take us a few months to finish the game at this rate, but at least I'll have lots of time to think about my moves.
