View Full Version : Hardest games you've beaten/attempted

I was in a conversation tonight with Blazur and thought about the hardest games I defeated, and the games which bested me. Those who game hardcore, lightly or casually, I challenge you to share the hardest games you've beaten... and the hardest game you've attempted to best. The rules are simple:

1. You may pick up to 5 in each category.
2. You may not ridicule others for being too hardcore or too casual. We each game in our own fashions, let us respect everyone's ability to share.
3. Obviously, you had to beat it legitly 100%, no cheats/exploits, or walkthroughs.

Beaten:

1. Blaster Master (NES)
2. Bionic Commando (NES)
3. Adventures of Lolo 2 (NES)
4. Pac Man (Arcade) [took me 14 credits, there are 255 levels)
5. Milon's Secret Castle (NES, took me ages)

Still haven't bested:
1. Adventures of Lolo 3 (NES)

StarCraft Brood War - Zerg Mission 10: Omega
LoZ:TP - final Ganondorf battle

1) Legendary Wings. This was a top-down shooter that required pure reflexes and quick thinking. My heart was racing at the end because of how difficult it was.
2) Bionic Commando
3) Solomons Key
4) Ninja Gaiden II. As a kid this game infuriated me so much I punched a hole in my bedroom wall.

Modern games just aren't as difficult as they used to be back in the day. The NES had some of the most challenging games available.

I respect your opinion. Personally I created like 10 hatcheries and got an extra base or two and mass produced like crazy while protecting everything with a few sunks/spores. To each his own. All that matters is that you have fun. :)

The hardest mission IMO was probably To Slay the Beast, or Eye of the Storm.

1. Megaman games (not the X ones, they are easier) so freaking hard. I managed to finish the first one + the 7th one and got pretty far in number 9 but for the rest wow.

2. F-Zero Gx (Gamecube)story mode on hardest difficulty (gamecube). This was so freaking insane. I managed to do it but I did broke up a controller in the process :p

3. Ninja Crusader (NES) one of my favorite NES game but one of the hardest

4. Zelda (NES) One of the most hardcore adventure game. I finished it with my father when I was a kid. We literally had to draw our own map of the world because of the lack of any assistance to the players. We also called Nintendo because we couldn't finish Ganon castle with the keys that we had. Of course they told us we forgot to go in that secret dungeon behind a bush where you find the master key that unlock all doors -.-

5. A lot of other game made me want to destroy the universe but I think the hardest crap I've played is Starcraft multiplayer mode against koreans...

Beaten: (After much swearing, and more than a few replaced controllers)

Castlevania I - (NES - 10+ years to get past the Grim Reaper...seriously....there are still tooth impressions in that controller.)
Castlevania III (NES - Unfortunately, the last difficult Castlevania game ever made)
Perfect Dark 'perfect' level (N64 - Probably my favorite game for that system.)
Ghosts and Goblins (NES - when it told me I had to start over cuz it was a, 'fake' Satan, they almost had to call the Sheriff to drag me away.)
Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64) Too bad Rare only works for Microsoft now - they put out some pretty good schtuff
Street Fighter II (coin-op)

Never beat:

Ninja Gaiden (NES- Never beat the last boss)
Castlevania II (NES - Found out years later that there were places where the character had to kneel down for 20+ seconds to reveal new paths. After that, the game practically played itself........Cheap.)
Starcraft 64 (N64 - However, I blame the stoopid controller - only ever got to 'True Colors')
Turok 64 - N64 -Cant remember where I even left off

Toughest RTS level - ever - for me was WC3's 'Under the Burning Sky' (Final Undead mission) on hard - Admittedly, I'm not the best WC player, but I had to restart that one more than a few times. :)

The first Quake on Nightmare (though that wasn't that difficult),
Descent (I've no idea about difficulty settings in this game, but boy, were the final levels tough)
Wing Commander: Prophecy on the highest difficulty setting (challenging, but a lot of fun at the same time, this is one hell of an underrated game)
Panzer General (old turn based WW II strategy game, I'm not sure I've won a single mission there)

Also attempted beating Myth and Myth II on Legendary (and with No Casualties to boot) many years ago, should dig up the CDs and try it again some day.

-Diablo1 Hellfire exp - amongst other things, i hated those ranged sucubus Deamons, stop fucking runing away from me and let me kill you, if only they wouldn't walk faster than you and fire while on the move ;)
-Metal gear NES
-Operation Flashpoint (walking for 20 minutes, until something shots you that is a mile away is not fun)
-Kaizo Mario (I wanted to kill myself after playing this, it turns out to be the most soul-crushing game ever conceived, It's so hard I bet they banned it in hell.) This game cannot be beaten by a mere human. :p

Beaten:

The Ecco the Dolphin series (Genesis ones only, the others don't exist).
Final Fantasy VIII, Ultimecia being the hardest last boss in the series, except for maybe Zeromus in IV.
Final Fantasy IV, see above, which is much harder than VIII.
Super Metroid: Redesign, the single hardest game I have ever beaten, start-to-finish. Haven't gotten all the powerups, though.
Halo 3 Legendary solo. One weekend of Hell, but it was worth it, given no one I know can lay claim to that (the pansies only managed it over Live with two or three people. Ha).

Attempted:
I Wanna Be The Guy, nuff said.
Super Metroid: Redesign, as I was going for a one-hundred percent playthrough before I gave up.
Final Fantasy II, because the leveling system is fucked. It's a shame, too, because Emperor Mateus is so fabtacular with his high-heels, zebra-print clothes, blue eye-liner, and blue lip-stick.

I think i never finished some of the very last BW Zerg missions.

Black & White: i quitted the game at the raining fireballs level.

Generally, i follow a single logic with games: i play a few levels, if the game keeps flowing all the time, and it's fun, i continue to play it. If the game has too high a difficulty level, and missions must be restarted continuously, giving the sense that you advance at snail rate, i stop playing it.

Black & White is a clear example: the game had a lot of potential, but it had like 5 levels, and very slow = boring after the 3rd level or so.

The bottom line: games should have content, and working difficulty levels, not make the game longer to play, by reloading the same part again and again and again...

-Operation Flashpoint (walking for 20 minutes, until something shots you that is a mile away is not fun)
Oh, yes, i tried the game recently. The difficulty level of the single player portion is ridiculous, it's scripted and scripts fail all the time. It's said to be a realist game, but in the mission when you're alone in a forest infested with enemies, in reality there's just one possible outcome: you die, or you throw your weapon away, raise your hands, and surrender. Ridiculous difficulty.

The multiplayer should be good, i never had the chance to test it.

1. Blaster Master (NES)

Respect. World's greatest game. When I was 6-7 I'd borrow this from neighbor and play the first three areas over and over again because I couldn't figure out how to get to area 4. :D I got my own copy a few years later.

The Game Boy Color port/remix is really great, but I've never managed to get through the last on foot/dungeon area so I don't even know what the end guy looks like. :(

LoZ:TP - final Ganondorf battle

Really? My biggest complaint with that game was how wimpy the bosses were, especially the final battle.

1. Megaman games (not the X ones, they are easier) so freaking hard. I managed to finish the first one + the 7th one and got pretty far in number 9 but for the rest wow.

Honestly I have never understood why the NES MM's have such a 'hard' rep. Maybe it's because I was raised on the NES and they were my favorites; played them through dozens of times. X1-3 and the Zero GBA games are great too.

Super Metroid: Redesign, the single hardest game I have ever beaten, start-to-finish. Haven't gotten all the powerups, though.

Tried this one. I like challenging games when they're FUN. I got to Maridia before I realized I just wasn't enjoying myself.

One unfinished game that comes to mind right now is Plok! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plok). I've had it for 10+ years and have never even made it to the flea pit. Too hard, too long, and no saves/passwords,

Such an awesome game though:

He just... wouldn't die... no matter how much I hit him... with every attack in the damn game... it took me 15 tries and half an hour on the last go to kill him.

In terms of difficulty, I guarantee you, their is no match. The game has infinite respawns though, with no forces restarts and no live count. The final episodes took me months of ramming my head into a single level just to beat. With limited lives, the game would be nigh unbeatable.

The game however, in addition to being an incredible challenge, is actually very well done from a game design point of view. While the difficulty is intense, the curve is well adjusted. And its free, so if you have nothing to do, and hours upon hours to burn on 18x18 level, I'd highly advise you give it a try,

Plus, they offer an excellent tutorial for those wanting to create more complex mini-games and small projects.

Things I'm most proud of:

1. Titan Quest Immortal Throne - Legendary Difficulty ( the amount of potions I've drank in this game is off the charts )
2. Master of Orion II - Impossible Difficulty ( was really hard at first, but now I can win almost guaranteed every time )
3. Devil May Cry IV - very cool game, but becomes so damn frustrating halfway through
4. Unreal Tournament 2007 - holding my own online and against Masterful level bots :D ( shock rifle combo is imbalanced as ass I tell you! )
5. Monkey Island III: Super Monkey difficulty :p:p:p

Freelancer? Man, that game brings back memories of junior high. That was among the first games I played as a "gamer", along with warcraft 3.

Good times.

Looking back, that game wasn't that great, and epic battles were basically nonexistent until the last few missions of the game.

also, just to reiterate. Anyone who hasn't go try out N, way of the ninja.

Probably the best use of 0$ ever.OH, N! Yes, N is a fantastic free game that will challenge you for too long. It is on my "in progress" chart for the last 3 years. *thinks* That brings up another statement.. this may bring out some insane conversations.

I've beat NetHack. And that will now be my new #1. That game took me YEARS to beat... which I did on the night shift of my then developing job as a help desk technician.

I'd have to say... Contra come to mind. And since it's been yeeeeeeeeeeears since I touched any Contra game, going back to it would likely result in suicide. :P

Next game I'd like to try would be Godhand. :P Kicking people in the nads and spanking women while getting your own arse handed to you sounds like fun. I guess. >>

I can't play hardcore twitch shooters to save my soul. I'm ok with tactical shooters, but ironically, I hate playing them. As much as a love twitch shooters like the UT or quake series, at best, I can only play at a mediocre level.

And just because I'm a rebel. Soloing (with heros) Domain of Anguish Guild Wars:nightfall in its entirety except for malik (which is undoable with 4 players).

I miss guildwars, another fun game I want to play again.

Anyone remember an old SNK game called NAM-1975? I never completed it since the game itself doesn't let you continue when you reach the final boss, but what the heck, thought I might throw it in there anyways.
