View Full Version : If a chess company would produce SC related chess sets would you buy them?

well just wondering, as I feel chess is one of the best board games ever and the only one that requires true skill.

Fuck yeah I would.

Would it be designed for three players as opposed to one? Or would it just come with three piece-sets?

Or six, in case both players want one race.

Green and yellow for protoss. Red and blue for terran. Purple and orange for zerg.

Anyway, if it does one of those things, then sure.

Now, that's a wonderful idea!

I'd definitely buy a set.

No, because I already have a super sexy glass one with a blue and clear mirrored board.

hmm... They should do collectors sets..

Zerg vs Protoss
Terran vs Zerg
Protoss vs Terran

Each race would have its own units as its King, Queen, Knight, Bishop, Rook, and Pawn..

I was thinking Hydra would be a good knight piece for zerg, and a ghost would be a good bishop for terran, imo

I would definitely buy this...

It would be a cool thing to have as I currently don't have a chess set. And maybe I could get into playing chess more often.

As for DemolitionSquid's suggestion, I would get the Protoss Twilight Messiah set or one of the Zerg sets, probably the Queen of Blades set. I want my cute little zerglings! :D

I actually meant "set" as in all 6 factions + double sided board (two different tilesets) for like 200$.

Ah. Then I'm not sure I'd do that. Maybe if they had a deal where you could pick whatever two sets you wanted for [insert price here]. Knowing me, someone would try to steal one or two of the sets if I bought all six.

That could work too. 2 factions + board for X$, each additional faction for Y$.

Zerg - Queen of Blades
Pawn - Zergling
Rook - Hydralisk
Bishop - Defiler
Knight - Mutalisk
Queen - Ultralisk
King - Kerrigan

Zerg - Purity Of Essence
Pawn - Zergling
Rook - Hydralisk
Bishop - Defiler
Knight - Mutalisk
Queen - Ultralisk
King - Overmind

Those are so screwed up every-which-way it's not even funny. Hydra as Rook? Muta as Knight? Ultra as Queen? Ugh.

Zerg - Queen of Blades
Pawn - Zergling
Rook - Lurker
Bishop - Hydralisk
Knight - Mutalisk
Queen - Kerrigan
King - Overlord

Zerg - Purity of Bodily Fluids
Pawn - Zergling
Rook - Ultralisk
Bishop - Hydralisk
Knight - Mutalisk
Queen - Queen
King - Overmind

As for Protoss, you just gave Aldaris a Dark Templar. Lorelol. I'm not sure why you insist on each set having the exact same units for the same functions. Sort of defeats the purpose of quite a few of these (ie Twilight Messiah).

I chose my units very carefully.

The Pawns are all obvious.
The Rooks are all staple, iconic units. Rooks charge forward.
The Bishops are spellcasters. Bishops travel diagonally, subversively.
The Knights all fly. This is based on the strange L shape movemt given by the piece.
The Queen is the most powerful unit for each race. Given that it can travel anywhere on the chess board.
The King is represented by the most powerful leader of the faction. Gender is irrelevant.

I did not give anyone a DT. Twilight Messiah is named solely for the Tassadar piece because that's what Chris Metzen called him. It is not so he can have a DT instead of a HT. The same race factions are identical so as to avoid board confusion, except for the king pieces.

I cant believe it hasn't been done already.

Raynors Raiders: Revised
Pawn: Marine
Rook: Vulture
Bishop: Siege Tank
Knight: Wraith
Queen: Hyperion
King: Raynor

Sorry, but Vultures seem more like "Raynor's Raiders" than Ghosts, and if you're going to have a Battlecruiser, you might as well have the Hyperion.

United Earth Directorate: Special Edition
Pawn: Marine
Rook: Goliath
Bishop: Valkyrie
Knight: Ghost
Queen: Battlecruiser
King: Gerard Dugaulle

Let's face it, the off-kilter unit pathing of the Knight allows for some sneaky shenanigans, and the fact that the bishop can go clear across the map is befitting of an air unit.

I chose my units very carefully.

I don't doubt this. I doubt the criteria you chose by. ;)

The Rooks are all staple, iconic units. Rooks charge forward.

How do you define "staple, iconic units"? Vultures are arguably as popular, in pros' hands, as Tanks. Lurkers, over-all, are seen in battle about as often as Hydralisks. Ultralisks are seen WAY more often than Hydralisks.

I'd go with something a lot more objective for Rook, such as... long range, splash ground (Tank/Lurker/Reaver) or high HP (Tank/Ultralisk/Archon). I prefer the former.

The Bishops are spellcasters. Bishops travel diagonally, subversively.

In a vacuum I'd agree with you, but... the thing is, you can only throw X units at a chess board. There's a limit. Let's say one of the criteria you picked included Firebats on Terrans, we wouldn't just agree to it, would we? Like the Ghost it's unusable... unlike the Ghost, it doesn't somehow manage to maintain a huge fanbase anyway.

I'd rather start from the place of "what units would we like to include?" and work backwards from there to make sense of the criteria that'll get us there.

The Knights all fly. This is based on the strange L shape movemt given by the piece.

I went with you on this one. Although either Vulture or Goliath seem more intuitively correct as a Terran Knight, that leaves out air units completely... and that's kind of weird.

The Queen is the most powerful unit for each race. Given that it can travel anywhere on the chess board.
The King is represented by the most powerful leader of the faction. Gender is irrelevant.

And this is where it gets weird. It just feels right to have Kerrigan as the Queen, period. Not only does it represent her status as the Queen, it symbolizes her power and her willingness to get her own hands dirty. Jim Raynor, inside a suit or out of it, is just one man -- he is vulnerable.

Kerrigan is much more than one man. She is twenty man!

From there I think my selection of Overlord makes some sense (it's helpless but controls other units), and Queen for the Overmind... also just intuitively felt right.

I did not give anyone a DT. Twilight Messiah is named solely for the Tassadar piece because that's what Chris Metzen called him. It is not so he can have a DT instead of a HT. The same race factions are identical so as to avoid board confusion, except for the king pieces.

Corsair. Dark Templar tech. Aldaris. Would not use.

If someone's willing to go through the trouble of re-learning what chess piece is represented by the Hydralisk, I think they can take another 30 seconds to figure out the difference between two sets. When in Rome...

The problem here is the different approaches we both took to coming to our lists.

How do you define "staple, iconic units"?

Q: I say "Zerg," you say?
A: Zergling, Hydralisk, Mutalisk, Ultralisk, etc.

Vultures are arguably as popular, in pros' hands, as Tanks. Lurkers, over-all, are seen in battle about as often as Hydralisks. Ultralisks are seen WAY more often than Hydralisks.

It has NOTHING to do with "what unit sees the most use in multiplayer."

I picked Ghost because it was a spellcaster, and its iconic in lore.

Glad we agree on one thing at least.

I could accept this.

Except it doesn't fit the theme or continuity I was going for.

I'll give you that one. Guess its Scout then.

Chess is complex enough as it is without needing to learn 6 new sets of representative units. Something like having the rook as Hydralisk in one set and just a Pawn in the other would be ridiculous.

Are we talking SC1 related or SC2 related (the pieces will differ depending on which game it's aimed at). Also, when all's said and done it's still only chess. what would be interesting would be a SC game developed around the basis of chess (ie, a board game using a standardised board, alternating moves and a variety of pieces), but with its own rules, pieces and board.

The_Blade

Well, a SC related chess set will be buyed by many fans looking for the artwork in a standard and fun game that is chess. Rules can easily vary from person to person. Example, some people believe that pwns must only move one spot from their starting location. Another example shows the many ways of setting up chess and the variations of general rules, like movement. Although they are not official, they still form part of the chess community and culture.

Might be interesting to come up with an entirely new game (along the lines of Chess, Go, etc.) for this. (?) I'd hate to be the one doing the math, but maybe even a game designed for three or more players.

How about this, each set comes with 2 of every piece (except heroes, Marines, Zerglings and Zealots), and can chop-and-change units on their bases (each base displaying the traditional piece, or the name of the traditional piece), thus allowing any combination of pieces in any roles.
