View Full Version : Hypothetical Reboot?

The chances of this happening are slim to none, but I want to get everyone's opinions anyway. I know I haven't posted in a while (I'll respond to prior threads when I can)
If the writers currently on Team 1 (the team that deals with RTS games) internalized the criticisms that have been laid out here, and came to agree with the [bulk[/B], not all mind you, but most, THEN what do you think are the chances of a potential reboot?
From what I've seen, the SC2 community seems to be getting smaller and smaller, which isn't actually all that bad as far as change and progress goes. We are proportionally larger than before, and if you make cogent yet concise arguements on the B.net forums, then maybe some developers will take heart.

Blizzard is more worried about LGBTQIAWTF statement these days, as is the case with the shit going on in Overwatch. I wouldn't trust them with a reboot right now. Without the old vestiges of StarCraft, it may not be any better. Wait until the current company collapses and then rebuild from the ashes.

But the reason I'm so invested is because I can't fathom how amazing Blizzard games could be if they just had the right paradigm and direction. Imagine SC1, but with all of the resources and technology that we have now? OOOOOOH BOY.

I don't like where David Kim is taking SC2. Instead of slowing down attack rates for example, or lowering dps per plot, he instead speed things up, muddying the gameplay.
Example, lowering HT energy regen is so much better than making them unusable.
Players favor Blobs because they provide more dps without risk. Instead, I recommend giving AOE spells to balance blobs, while there should be unit types that are good when in a tight group.
There is an option in the map gameplay data that makes units not form into blobs, maintaining formation, unless you deliberately start clicking in the middle of the group. I think they can program more things like this into the engine.

I agree, I think the uber-fast-paced e-sports mindset has actually hurt StarCraft gameplay a lot. When you play SC1, it's definitely intense, but it's not so jittery, you have some time to react and think. To paraphrase the YouTuber corpsealot; I could play 8 games of Starcraft 1 back to back and still want more, one game of SC2 has me feeling like I just moved a giant boulder.

I don't think esports is about speed. Look at DoTA, it's about control, not speed. If DoTA was as muddy as SC2, I don't think it will fly.
I haven't played dota by the way, I've just seen a few games.

There is a way to tremendously reduce deathball bullshit, and it is by changing the collision radii of the units forcing them to spread out (it's so easy that I've done that myself!)
of course there's still a ton of shitty units but if blizzard got off their ass and increased the radii of the units that would likely be a surprisingly large step in the right direction.

Even having a "spread out" command like Empire at War did would be cool. (to be fair, the infantry was locked in squads, but making them increase distance from each other and crouch while reducing speed was cool)
Tired of everything killing each other so quickly, stuff also died in BW but the pathing probably made it so that units didn't actually attack each other as much, rather then standing and shooting immediately.

medivac heal is also too fast. lowering that down makes mech units have more value.
