Thanks.

Actually, I didn't make either. My avatar is from DeviantArt. As for my sig; I can't remember where I found it. Although once I get my computer and tablet, I'll work on an avatar and sig but for now, these two work.

Those a great :)
Are you doing only protoss ones, or did you do any other .(Any terran maybe)?
And as for request, are you only doing strict starcraft related ones?;)
Hope to see more in the future :D

Thank you, Perfecttear!

Oh, no. I always do drawings. It just so happens that most of my StarCraft fanart is of the Protoss since I'm really good at drawing them. I've wanted to do Terran but I didn't know what to draw.

Right now I am, but that's only to keep people from requesting a million things. I don't mind doing one or two non-StarCraft related pieces but not too many. I don't want to do too many art because I might end up rushing them. Which is always a bad thing. I also don't think I'm doing my best since it's only lineart. Although I've promised to colour the pictures when I get my computer and tablet.

Hopefully I'll be doing the Queen of Blades next. And then maybe a Terran picture.

It's okay, everyone has a talent. Mind just happens to be drawing. Besides, you're good at what you do. :)

First off let me say a few things to consider if you really want to get into the game industry. (From my own experience in the graphic design industry, and the things the professionals keep saying on sites like www.cgtalk.com)

So far I haven't done any non-StarCraft related artwork as I'm not interested but when I get my computer and tablet I might start on some.
Yes! You definately have to start on non-StarCraft stuff at some point! The entire creative industry, whether simple logo design like I do, or the far more artistic game or movie industries - is all about coming up with different and new ideas.
Additionally you'll learn more by doing 'original' artwork as it's also called - A protoss is something we already know the looks of, or can find some reference for, but doing something from scratch forces you to think out of the box. :)

As for Constructive Criticism
You have an exellent attention to details in both the line art and pencil shading.
My only critique, is that I noticed they have little to no perspective on the faces - ie. they are 'flat' sideviews. (Kinda like ancient egyptian paintings, where peoples faces are only seen from the side, no matter what the body pose is like)
You certainly have the skill, so moar perspective plz! :D

Oh, don't worry, I'll be doing some Zerg drawings soon. I drew a picture of a hydralisk but I can't seem to find it anywhere. The first Zerg picture will probably be of the Queen of Blades though - she's always fun to draw.

I used to do original work in the past but I kinda stopped. The reason I don't usually do non-Starcraft related art is because I can't seem to get things right. For example, I'll have this great idea about something I want to draw but when I start to draw it doesn't exactly come out the way I want to. It may be because the paper I work with is the standard size copy paper and that usually isn't big enough - I don't want to have to scan a picture multiple times to get the entire thing scanned and then have to piece everything together in an art program. Hopefully, I'll be able to start working on some new ideas when I get my computer and tablet since with an art program I can have a lot more room to draw than I ever could with paper and not have to scan it multiple times.

Yeah, I noticed there tends to be no perspective in my drawings as well. I have no idea why. There were a few that did but I can't seem to remember where I placed them. I'll definitely have to change things up a bit!

I really like the Selendis one. I wish we had more of her.

I might do another one of her when I get my computer and tablet - in a different pose of course. I've been thinking of doing a large picture for each of the three races but I haven't figured out exactly what each scene will be yet.

Good stuff......gal?

The only thing that really drives me nuts is the huge watermark. It makes some of the drawings look confusing. Consider signing your name or pseudonym to your art with the date and maybe even your art site.

Otherwise, gj Sarov :D

Sarov
09-16-2009, 01:06 PM
Heh. Also, why is it that all the names for females sound so weird? Dudette, chick, gal…

Yeah. I figured a lot of people would get annoyed by that. It’s just that I’ve become paranoid about my artwork getting stolen. It’s happened before. Someone sold a poster I had done on Ebay once (it was fully coloured) and someone else had stolen my artwork and claimed their cousin had done it. I’ve even had someone try and upload my artwork elsewhere.

I think it would be easier if I had a colour picture and had signed my name on it. It would be a lot harder to erase it without messing up the picture, wouldn’t it? But for now, I’ll have to stick with the watermark.

Also thank you, n00bonic!

- What do you think of my drawings?
I think they are awesome! Can't wait to see some of the colored=)

- What's your favorite piece of artwork?
Definitely the Zeratul one.

- Which piece do you most want to me to colour when I get my computer and tablet?
The Zeratul piece, obviously^^

- Have any requests for me? Post them in this thread! Note: Please keep in mind that I'm busy with school and I can't color anything yet because of a lack of utensils. All pictures will be lineart but they will be coloured when I get my computer and tablet. Also I'd prefer right now if all requests were StarCraft.
An SC2 Reaver^^ But only if you really really want to. I'd like to make a sig/avatar out of it, but that's not a requirement for the artwork :)

Yay, someone actually answered the questions!

Thanks for the comments, Dauntless! I'll make sure to colour the Zeratul piece. And I've been thinking of doing one very large, colored piece for each race as well as a separate one depicting some of their heroes. Got any ideas you'd like to share with me for the big ones?

Also, how about this: I'll draw a Reaver and color it and you can use it as an avatar? You'll have to wait a while, but I promise I'll do it!

If it wasn't for the fact that you're getting a tablet, I would have recommended a light box.
I use this one http://www.artograph.com/products/light_lighttracerII.htm

As for tablets - I never could get used to them. I'm the type who needs to see how my pen/tool is interacting with the 'paper'.
If anything I'd need one of those tablet monitors (http://www.wacom.com/cintiq/index.php), but they are still rediculously expensive.

I used to have a lightbox actually but that disappeared for some reason. Don't know where it ended up.

Yeah, that's the tablet that I'm referring to. I don't like having to stare at the computer screen while I draw. I like to, as you put it, "see how my pen/tool is interacting with the 'paper'". Well, the cost is no problem for me because I'll be able to afford a PC and a tablet. I was thinking of getting the Cintiq 21ux (http://www.wacom.com/cintiq/cintiq-21ux.php) but I'll settle for the smaller Cintiq 12WX (http://www.wacom.com/cintiq/cintiq-12wx.php).

Yeah, the tablets are very useful. It allows me to work with a bigger page than what I have when I work with real paper. It's also fun - at least when you have the pen on tablet displays like either of the Cintiqs.

I'll see what I can do about that. Should have it done by, at max, a week.

Yeah. That's another thing I like about tablets. One of the many reasons I hate working on real paper is that if you erase too much it wears down the paper and will even leave marks. I hate having to scan it and then erase as many of the marks as I can without ruining the picture. I also don't like having to constantly erase things in order to get it right. Which is why I can't wait until I get my stuff in the next few months. At least when I get my stuff it will be easier to draw in a way.

Alright, one pre-infested Kerrigan coming up! Keep in mind that it will only be lineart for now. I will colour it - if you'd like - when I get my computer and tablet in the next few months. Also keep in mind that I have other drawings to do as well so it might take a while.

Well, it depends on what I'm doing. Sometimes I'll start a pic, put it away and do something else for a while. But if you count only the time I spend on a picture its anywhere from half an hour to an hour and sometimes up to two hours. Yeah, I draw pretty fast. But this also depends on how much detail, how many characters and what's in the picture.

Depends. What do you have in mind for a request?

I can attempt to do it with the equipment I have but it would look much better if I could color it since you can't really make it look like they are being warped in unless you have access to colors so... I'll make it a work in progress and start on the lineart. When I get my computer and tablet I finish it and you can judge the final piece.

I enjoying looking at people’s artwork- I used to be an aspiring artist until a few events rendered that impossible. I rarely draw nowadays, if at all, so seeing other people’s drawings is a pleasure in itself.

I've always loved drawing and it makes me very happy when other people notice my talent and like my artwork. Lately though, I've been stuck with lineart because I don't have access to a computer with PhotoShop/Corel Draw and a tablet but now that I will be getting both thanks to a large check, I'm extremely happy.

I even have a special piece planned, which will probably be dedicated to the members on SC:L that have taken the time to look at my art. I'll give you guys a little teaser: it will probably involve a High Templar, Dark Templar, zealot, Ghost, marine and a whole lot of Zerg. Also, it will probably be wallpaper size unlike my other artwork.

All creative people need a certain amount of attention and recognition- it helps to keep us going, and to give us confidence in our work. Though I’m sure we’d continue anyway, even if people didn’t notice it, because it’s what we love.
Line drawings used to be my speciality- I’d jump straight into it without even a pencil sketch. I loved the thrill of knowing that I only had one chance to get it right. :p Pencil and water colour were my other main mediums- my passion for drawing faded just as I was getting in to colouring with Photoshop etc, though I have used it a lot to create numerous graphics projects. Maybe I’ll get back into drawing someday- I sure hope so. :p

I can’t wait to see this special surprise piece. :)

I won't lie but I absolutely love attention and recognition, mostly recognition though. It makes me feel better and makes me forget the fact that I'm depressed for a little while.

You really should get back into drawing! It's a great hobby and it's very calming at the same time. Even just doodling is better than nothing. :)

Yeah, me too. It's going to take a while because I first have to the lineart and then block the colours etc. Even so, I think it's going to turn out great considering that I've learned a lot about colouring on the computer from Mr--Jack's videos.

Everyone wants a large check from the government free of charge. :D

Yeah, I've been working on the faces and trying different angles rather than profile or straight on so that I can be ready for my big surprise project.

Your lines are good. The poses could use some work, they seem a bit stiff. The most difficult part of drawing an action scene are creating the prehensile strength, tension and motion of the scene. All in all, very impressive, especially considering you have lots of time to develop. I did at least look at them though! =p

I've never really tried any different posing because I usually wasn't satisfied with them. So I stick to something I know. This new project will be the first time I actually do multiple, different poses and keep the picture for once.

And thanks for taking the time to look at them! I'm sorry I didn't have better works for you to look at though. Hopefully, that will change when I get my tablet.

I’m afraid doodling and quick sketches are all I can do now. I have a physical hindrance that stops me from drawing for long periods of time- it’s one of the reasons I had to give up art. :(

Recognition makes the world go round for me. Probably because I don't either get enough or because I don't get it when it is due. And attention, well I don't get enough of it either - it's a pitiful amount to begin with, I'll tell you that.

Aw. That sucks. Art is like a release, much like video games and Dungeons and Dragons or World of Darkness are. It keeps me sane and happy.

Well, I'll tell you this. Just because I like you and because it's nice to meet a fellow artist, I'm going to do something nice. I know you like metal and I like Warhammer art, two things that go together better than Starcraft and metal. I used to do some awesome pieces of Warhammer inspired art. So here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to draw and dedicate a piece to you. I won't tell you what it's about but it'll be a surprise. I should be able to get working on it by two weeks or so - I'm thinking one for the computer to be ordered and another for it to arrive.

Here, I can make it easier for you. Mr--Jack's art videos. (http://www.youtube.com/user/MrJackArt) The ones you want to watch are the Overseer video and the Infested Terran video.

Wow, I’m truly touched. It used to always be me drawing for other people, now I get to see what it feels like. :)There’s no need to push yourself to get working on it- I tend to be a very busy person so I totally understand if it takes months before you get started. :p

Your new computers specs are impressive btw. It’s amazing what a large check can do.
I’ll check out Mr Jack’s videos when I finally get a day off. Thanks again, Sarov, I really do appreciate it. I’ll have to find some way to repay you. ;)

I’d better run now, I’m already late. :p

Yeah, I've been working on the faces and trying different angles rather than profile or straight on so that I can be ready for my big surprise project.

From my limited artisitic experience, I can say that faces are troublesome. My advice would be to take a specific face and draw it - just the face - in a variety of poses.

Thanks for viewing my artwork Ghost. It's always nice when people have comments for me especially if it's constructive criticism.

My pleasure.

Really? That's a surprise. I usually find that artists love drawing for each other. Especially if they are inspired to draw something.

Ah. I'm usually not a very busy person. One could say that I have too much free time. I'm lucky in the sense that when I get my computer, I can spend most of the week drawing. Even if I was busy, it wouldn't take me months to get it started. At the maximum it would take me about a week or two.

You should definitely check out his videos as soon as you can. I was surprised that I learned a few things from them. Like the trick of placing a colour like grey or something over the entire image and making it an overlay. Or at least that's what I think happens. I'm not too sure.

I'm just glad that I can afford the computer in the first place as well as a $1200 Wacom tablet (the Wacom 12WX). I'd be pretty said if I had to settle for a computer with lower specs. But thankfully I don't have to.

Anys, if you would like you can pick between Dark Eldar-inspired, Chaos Marine-inspired etc. So long as I know of them I'll try my best to incorporate that style in the artwork. For you, I was thinking either Chaos Marine or Dark Elder. Heck, I might as well do both fighting each other. Of course, that is if you would like that.

Yes, they are. I guess the thing with me is that I haven't had much practice because I haven't been drawing as often as I used to. I'll probably be drawing practically every day once I get my computer and tablet though - I've gotten bored of the traditional way of drawing and would like an easier way to colour my artwork.

Updates

My Cintiq 12WX tablet arrived this morning and since it will only be a matter of time until my computer comes, I will be taking requests. These requests must be StarCraft ones (for now). So, I will be taking up to five requests or less if I deem so - requests meaning new artwork and not "Colour this one please!" Also note that I will work on them as I want to but I will finish all of them. After all, there are times when people get stuck on something and decide to take a break.

So, suggest something and I'll let you know if I'm going to do it! Also, first come, first serve!

I concur with this suggestion.

Although, it could be difficult seeing as how we have only 2 (I think) references to how he looks. His portrait in game, and that UED vid showing him in a picture.

You know me all too well, Khas.

If you guys didn't know I'd be doing Stukov, you don't know me at all. Of course I'm doing Stukov. He's my favourite Terran character. :D

And I can do Stukov. I've done him before. It was only a pencil drawing but damn! And that is all I have to say on that matter. Too bad I don't have it anymore. :(

I'll do a sketch of Stukov today when I go back down to the classroom (there is no internet in the classroom because someone ruined the wire connecting the computers to the modem) and then you'll see what I mean by the fact that, yes, I can do him without any problems.

And that picture of infested Stukov kinda looks like Mengsk so I won't be using that as a reference. It's better to use the in-game portrait and this picture. (http://www.starcraft-overmind.ic.cz/Starcraft/heroes/stukov.gif)

But I can do Duran as well.

I know. It sucks. I mean I have my tablet, but I don't have my computer - it hasn't arrived yet. And I'm not installing my tablet on anyone's computer but my own. So basically, I really can't do much. I don't want to add new pictures - I've got enough black and white, and greyscale pictures, and I refuse to try to colour anything. So basically, there really isn't much I could do but wait to be honest...

To give you an example of what I mean by what a beast it is: My monitor actually doubles as a TV that can pick up cable signals. The tower is 23 inches high, 8 inches wide and 20 inches long. The thing is enormous!

And yeah, it would look amazing - I've always been good at drawing Stukov. But first I need to practice colouring. I can draw, that much has been proven, and I can shade extremely well, it's just that I need to practice colouring more. Although I find it really easy to use the Cintiq. Much better than the traditional tablet.

Unfortunately, the key to improving one's artwork is practice, which can be a slow process. However, I must say that, while black and white art can be very impressive, colour greatly enhances the visual impact.

It's not the size that bugs me, but the fact that it's so heavy. Oh, and it has three fans. If I had known that, I wouldn't have gotten liquid cooling...

Why do I not find that hard to believe?

Perhaps because: a) I'm an excellent drawer, b) Stukov is my favourite Terran character, c) I don't need a lot of pictures to be able to draw someone and d) I've had practice drawing him before?

It depends on which one you are refering to. I haven't started on the one with the Ghost, High Templar, Dark Templar, marine etc. facing the Zerg. I'm trying to decide on the pose for the High Templar.

Right now, I've started a simple Dark Templar picture to practice colouring. I'll upload that sometime next week - probably early next week.

As do I. Though colour can be great, I've seen works that just look so much better left as a monotone. There's just a certain charm to seeing art that is black and white, especially (for me anyways) with graphite or pencils.

But, yes, colours, depending on what you're after, can be time consuming and would require some practice. Of course, I'm thankful for layers. :P

Yes. That is true. Colour can be great but it is time-consuming. Very much so. If I were good at it, I would attempt it more often but I'm not so good at it. Which is why I need some practice. I can shade, it's just that making it look really good like the people at Blizzard isn't what I'm good at unfortunately.

Also a sort of mini update - I need to get a different program than GIMP. Sometimes the tools work but most of the time they don't. For example, I select the paintbrush tool and try to colour but nothing happens. I can do things like open and close files, open menus and select tools without any problems it's just that painting sometimes doesn't work.

It's alright. It's not bad enough that I absolutely need another program but rather a bit annoying. All I have to do is open and close it until it works.

Also, have I ever stated how much I hate colouring pictures on the computer? I can do metal easily enough but I can't really do anything else or at least I can't make it look realistic and not cell-shaded.

True but I don't have the tools (Copic markers, oil pastels etc) to do that nor the money to get said tools. That and it's far easier, in a way, to colour on the computer. Or at least to blend things together - thank you for the blend and smudge tools! It's just that it takes a lot of practice; practice which I don't have.

Yes, layers are a miracle. Especially multiply. Although I found a way to make a more realistic blending of colours in GIMP. Instead of having the smudge tool set to 100%, I lowered it to 30%. It keeps it from looking like the colours just bled into each other. I tested it out by drawing a ball and shading it in, and then using the smudge tool. Works wonderfully now. This should help me out immensely when colouring.

I'm going to do another test picture since the first one was okay but not good enough for me. I should have it up sometime in the next few days at the earliest or next week at the latest.

Well, it is almost Christmas day and I haven't produced any work. I'm sure some of you are wondering why I'm procrastinating so much. Well, the reason is that I need to work on my colouring desperately. I think it would be a shame if I gave you guys a piece of artwork that I didn't find good enough or even good for that matter. So I decided that I should start working on colouring first before I make any serious work. This doesn't mean that I won't be uploading stuff for you guys, it just means that I'm going to be taking time off from commissions while I work on my colouring technique. Every now and then, to mark a major achievement, I will attempt to make and colour a StarCraft or sci-fi or piece of art for you guys as a sort of thank you for being patient with me.

Also, because I won't have access to the library on the 25, 26, and 27, I'll use this last post to wish you guys a Merry Christmas. I'll be back on Monday and hopefully I will have something to show you guys. Who knows? ;)
