I recently tried to play against a new fan made custom AI and I must say I was pleased to see that they are way better than what is in the original game. The problem though is that they still lack fundamental skills to be able to compete against average players like myself. They need to micro and react to my build orders in a better way. I have very VERY limited programming skills but is it possible to make such an AI with starcraft 1?

I don't think so. As I recall, even the Brood War AI app was partially made by the guy who coded StarCraft's original AI. The trouble is, the AI system in StarCraft just says when to build what, you're not able to access how they use the individual units or abilities.

Along with my suggestion (http://sclegacy.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1629&postcount=7)of having customizable AI's available in Melee games for StarCraft II, I also do hope that in StarCraft 2's AI editor, you will have some access to AI's behavior with units.

Btw, I too love the player-made AI's, they really do present a challenge.

You dont need to compare starcraft 1 outdated AI with whats to come really.

Indeed only thing you could customize in original starcraft AI was build orders and in them do switches that reacted to what the opponent builds.

Thee are a few projects that tried to implement improved micromanagement etc but its very advanced and hardly worth the effort.

But as I said, expect great custom AIs for Starcraft 2, it will be a completely different story, I hope at least.
