Blizzard Custom Map: Burning Tide

Written by LordofAscension  | Thursday, 09 September 2010 20:33

News - StarCraft II

Recently, Blizzard announced and released its first official custom map. Burning Tide introduces the greed gametype to StarCraft II.

Featuring timed lava surges and collectible mineral caches, Burning Tide is a 3v3 map that combines several thematic elements from the epic single-player campaign mission "The Devil's Playground." Like the campaign mission, the goal of this game is greed, and the first team to reach the specified resource total wins! Players hoping to achieve victory on this map will need to work together, carefully managing their team's unit production and safeguarding their vulnerable workers as they defend against enemy forces.

The 3v3 is divided into north and south teams; the goal - reach 15,000 minerals gathered before the other team. Each player's total is added to a collective total, but it is a running total, so any units, buildings, or upgrades that are purchased decrease the total. Additionally, each main offers only one vespene geyser and free mineral shards are scattered across the low ground after a lava surge. After playing several instances, a few things are clear:
  • Mules are popular - and with good reason.
  • The choice between hoarding your resources or building adequate defenses/army is the crux of the game flow.
  • Similarly, the game centers around harassing enemy workers, while protecting your own.
  • Several styles of playing are available, from defensively turtling to aggressively trying eliminate your enemy before they can reach the goal total.
  • Units with high utility and longevity are often best (those that have shields, can be repaired, or have special energy abilities).
  • Obviously, the gametype calls for unconventional strategies not normally seen on the competitive ladder; creativity is your friend.
Since this map is very new, we are sure to see various strategies and tactics evolve. Fans and players of classic RTS titles will enjoy a refreshing take on the traditional greed gametype.
