Fighter Replays is a newly launched site that hosts replay files for StarCraft. Though it is in a beta stage at this point, it already hosts a slew of features. For example, users can upload, favorite and request replays. SC:L recently got a chance to interview Skew, one of their lead admins.

Tell us something about yourself Skew.

Skew
I was born and raised in California, now living near Phoenix, Arizona. I initially got into gaming with Red Alert and then Counter-Strike, and SC was just the craziest challenge so I stuck with it. Otherwise my life is boring, I live with my brother currently and am on a Chinese clock more than not. I used to try to deny being a nerd, but I think that's a lost cause now a days lmao.

SC:L
Give us some background information on Fighter Replays.

Skew
Fighter Replays was proposed by NicKy (team leader of iD and professional PHP developer by day) and we threw the idea back and forth for awhile. We wanted a site kind of like YouTube so everyone could upload their own replays and discuss/rate/interact around them. At first we couldn't decide if normal players would be interested in that, but we chose to go ahead anyways and find out. It was worth the risk. So far we've had really good feedback from the people that have used it and hopefully more find it useful and will take part. We'll also be adding forums and other community devices later on, but right now we're focusing on perfecting the replay system as it's the core point of the site.

SC:L
Is Fighter Replays only for StarCraft?

Skew
No, it was actually aimed at SC2 originally, but we launched it early because we wanted BW players to have something nice to use (we wanted something to use ourselves). In time it will probably support 5 or 6 games, all RTS (so SC, SC2, WAR3, C&C3, DOW, etc). Most likely we'll do one game at a time so we can build a community for each before moving on. With one account you'll be able to upload any of the games' replays we support, and of course the upload process and page for each replay will be the same, to keep everything streamlined and compact. In the end I think it'll be pretty kick-ass having all gamers for the popular titles coming together for their replay needs.

SC:L
Where did you get the idea for a StarCraft replay site?

Skew

It's hard to remember exactly how things started, but NicKy definitely brought it up... the idea died for about 5 months, and then for some reason we decided to do it when it came up again late 2007 (I think both of us wanted to finally do a big project; we were only used to doing smaller stuff). It's turned into a lot more than a simple website though, and aside from working our other jobs to pay the bills, if the opportunity presents itself we are fully prepared to drop them to support this full-time (if we're so lucky).

SC:L
What are some of the key features of Fighter Replays?

Skew

The big one is that everyone can upload replays that has an account into three skill categories (general for newbie~upper normal players, gosu for known guys and pros for pros in Korea).

Another big one would be duplicate replays -- they are no more! If you try to upload one that already exists, you'll be alerted with the link to the existing and the process will be canceled (I think it's about 5x more fun to browse replays when you know none of them are duplicates, don't you?)

I suppose the third/fourth (and final that I'll list) would be the ability to favorite replays and request replays of others -- those two things will be prevalent once the site is popular I think, although most people haven't discovered either yet, hehe.

SC:L
How does the request process work? Is it necessary to ask only single people or can the community help as well?

Skew
At the moment you can only request replays from a single user. Once you make a request on the user's replay page, they're alerted and have the option of deleting your request or connecting a replay to your request (via the replay's upload or edit page), in which case you'll be alerted and your request will be moved to 'filled' status. We'll be advertising that feature more once the community gets built up a little more.

We'll be adding forums eventually and there will be a section dedicated to replay requests so the entire community can take shots at it opposed to a single user (there will be also be a 'replay review' section, etc).

SC:L
Fighter Replays dynamically tracks APM, units, actions and hotkeys for StarCraft replays. Does Fighter Replays host videos or actual replay files? Is it dependent on the game?

Skew

Fighter Replays hosts replay files, not videos. Each game we support has it's own unique replays, but can all be uploaded by anyone with an account via the same upload page (as of now StarCraft is the only selection and game supported, but War3, C&C3, SC2 and others are planned).

SC:L
What do you ultimately hope to accomplish with Fighter Replays?

Skew
We'd like it to be a place where newbies, intermediate players and gosus alike enjoy coming together to share their gaming history, ask for help on their play, request replays from eachother and other general interaction around replays. So far no other sites have done this efficiently, and it's really necessary IMO. I couldn't tell you how many times I have personally wished there was an English replay site like Fighter Replays, especially when I was still training. So we think this is the solution to that.

SC:L
Thank you for your time Skew.

Skew
Thanks guys.

Make sure you visit Fighter Replays. It is destined to succeed with the advent of StarCraft II. StarCraft: Legacy wishes Skew and Fighter Replays the best of luck in the future.
