Thread: What Setting are optimal for competitve play?

Default What Setting are optimal for competitve play?

I have been fiddling around with settings and while low graphics etc looks ugly it makes the game so much clearer. It is really easy to see units and to micro them significantly more so then with everything on ultra. What settings do you play on to "gain an advantage".

I have tried to see if some settings make cloaked units easier to see. So far, I have not found a setting that has a noticable advantage over other settings.

I DO know that 1440x900 provides a slight tactical advantage over other resolutions.

I have not fiddled enough. I don't know a lot about graphics, and I am kinda waiting to see if someone else has some good ideas about settings.

Medium is generally ok, but it is very dependent on your graphics card. I play on high and only get some lag on detailed maps like Kulas, or on bigger 2v2 maps. LT, Metal, and all 1v1 maps are fine. If I drop to Medium, I receive no lag at all.

Medium is good, all the necessary stuff to make it actually look better than BW but not so much that you cant see whats going on. Ultra looks pretty but is maybe a bit too much for playing.

Yeah, for Ultra you'd need a quad core cpu and at least a GTS 250 or GTX 260c216, or an HD5830.

For my high settings im using a dual core and a GTX260c216.

I dunno what the minimum requirements are for ultra, but it autodetects high for textures and ultra for all of the graphics (at 1920x1080 no less) and I only have an 8800 ultra (though I do have a phenom x4). I dont get a solid 60 but I never dip below 30-40.

I play on Ultra because it's just the best custom game experience.

However, I did play a detailed jungle melee map once on Ultra with a friend and couldn't see jack. I'm a casual player though so I still play melee on Ultra anyway, doesn't bother me.

I can run Ultra fine. But I prefer low since it makes the units really easy to see they are just insanely bright and you can see everything that is going on really well especially with zerg and all those ovies that hang around. I have a GX2 9800 and a quad core i7.

I think some of us here do not understand the purpose of the OP.

We are not talking about what settings are optimal for your computer to run smoothly.

We are talking about: assuming your computer can run any setting, which settings would be best for maximum competitiveness.(Too much eye candy is bad)

For example, for many FPS games, the pros all have computers that can run ultra high settings. However, they deliberately choose the low settings, because it is easier to spot enemies in the low settings.

Its preference. Most people find it better to play it on low, due to less distractions of processed physics. Units also seem to also respond "better" on a low setting. I can care less, I can do high or ultra on a competitive level.
