The scale and the viewpoint are "in-human", so that a lack of empathy or understanding of the characters is part of the point of the story. It can't be viewed in a fully "prosaic" mode.
I don't know. It was definitely superior to any of the AvP movies, certainly better than A: Resurrection. There just seemed to be a subtlety lacking in the characters; they were more caricatures than characters. Halloway's depression for instance made no sense to me. Dude, you just travelled some umpteen lightyears to find that all of your theories were CORRECT. You're vindicated; why the sudden lapse into depression?

Maybe it would have been more believable if it had been established that he had a history of depression; then we can chock it up to him being overwhelmed by everything, like that sudden drop-off of serotonin you experience when an amazing weekend's comes to an abrupt end.

But aside from all that, the dialog kinda got to me. It was a little annoying. I dunno why; just very trite and predictable. Trying to be too dramatic in some instances.
