Thread: Korean Beta Key Contest

    Question Korean Beta Key Contest

    Source: http://www.blizzard.co.kr/sc2localiz...st/index.shtml

Unfortunately, the text that actually explains what this is for is in an image,
so half of it will be unreadable, unless you understand Korean.
Here are the links to view the translated pages:

Best I can tell, this is a contest for creating Korean names for each of the
units, buildings, upgrades, and abilities -- hence the name "localization contest".

lol, nice way to deal with the problem of finding new names.

This is funny considering most of the pro's, who happen to speak korean want the names to be in english so everyone can understand the game better, and what everyone else is talking about when referring to a particular strategy, unit, etc.

I guess the best thing the pro's can do is simply play the english version, but any korean's trying to become a pro may end up being in a bad situation once they get there... Trying to get to know the english version of everything.

I don't see why they need Korean names for anything, its a game, any name in the game isn't an "english" name, its a "Starcraft" name.

I hear what you're saying, but the fact remains that the names and terminology would be written using the English alphabet, which is why they are working on Korean translations, so that Korean don't necessarily need to know how to read English to gain a thorough understanding of the game. OR at least as thorough as English-fluent players have.

Holy crap, they are giving out 400 beta key invitations for this thing? It seems like the fansite program would get at least close to that right? If they are renaming things, its not a translation. I have no problem with "marine" written in the korean alphabet. I think its ridiculous for a "marine" to be called something completely different though. It's not like it will ever effect me, but allowing them to name everything differently just adds to international confusion.

Right, but I don't think the name really has as much to do with it as you might think. People recognize the marine throughout SC fandom, and there's not a whole lot of confusion on that.

I guess they're thinking any Korean would be a good beta tester.

But....if Koreans don't use the English name for units in StarCraft, we'll never see anything like this anymore:
