Default Who do you play as in each campaign?

Are these people fleshed out in lore anywhere?

    Starcraft Campaigns

Terran: The Magistrate. Is he mentioned at all in Liberty's Crusade or other books? Who is he? Where does he go afterwords?

Zerg: Unnamed Cerebrate. There's an unnamed Cerebrate in Queen of Blades but if I remember right it gets killed on Char rather than following the Overmind, so they're probably not the same being.

Protoss: Do you play as Artanis? I can't remember specifics but that's the impression I got from the BW Protoss campaign.

    Brood War Campaigns

    Protoss: ?

Terran: Unnamed Captain, presumed killed with the rest of the UED fleet.

Zerg: Unnamed Cerebrate, could possibly be the same Cerebrate as before (you're purple in both campaigns).

They've all been retconned out because they're plotholes, so now they're either dead or nonexistent.

    Starcraft Campaigns

Terran: mentioned in LC & does indeed help ferry people off Mar Sara, but that's about it.

Zerg: This unnamed Cerebrate is the one you played & the one in Queen of Blades. Instead of going to Aiur it stays with Kerrigan to hunt Protoss. It gets killed by Tassadar.

    Protoss: You're Artanis.

    Brood War Campaigns

    Protoss: Another executor. Perhaps Selendis.

    Terran: nobody knows.

Zerg: I'd be willing to bet it didn't exist & was largely a plot device.

The magistrate was very briefly mentioned in Liberty's Crusade.

You're a cerebrate in Episode VI. Possibly the same one in StarCraft: Hybrid. Definitely not the same one from Episode II (that one died during Episode III at the hands of Tassadar). By StarCraft II Kerrigan has killed any remaining cerebrates off, an easy task as there's no Overmind around to resurrect them.

And yes, the cerebrate from Episode II and the one in Queen of Blades are the same. That cerebrate dies after Episode II ends, so the timing works.

So in Wings of Liberty do we know if we're going to play as Raynor, or some faceless person?

And in Heart of the Swarm you're Kerrigan, and in Legacy of the Void you're Zeratul.

Man, the unamed Captain from Broodwar is by far the coolest and best player that you could play as.

    Seriously.

Also, I don't like the retcon involving Artanis, the conversations had with him in BW were pretty memorable.

I thought the Cerebrate from SC:V came back in BW since Kerrigan says something like "Cerebrate, you watched over me in my incubation so I will let you live."

A common misconception. She didn't say that in Brood War, she said she had cut it off from the Swarm and that if it obeyed her, she'd let it live.

In StarCraft vanilla she was happy the cerebrate had watched over her incubation, and didn't threaten it. (She did threaten Zasz, though.)

Ahh, I guess I got my wires crossed. It seems weird to think you will play as Kerrigan in SC2 as there really are no other Zerg characters anymore. Unless, they make the Queens or something sentient enough to be characters.
