The time has finally come! Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm is officially released!

Im very proud and super excited to finally show this movie to you. Constructive criticism of any kind is greatly appreciated!

Starcraft - Rebirth of the Swarm is the biggest Starcraft 2 Machinima Project to date. It is a 60 minute long, fully voiced Starcraft 2 machinima movie. For the last two and a half years, this machinima has been my pet project and it has come a long way since its announcement and im very proud of getting this project finished.

Now, before we get to the link, heres some information about the movie in general:

- The movie is fully voiced in english and also features english subtitles

- The movie has an exact running time of 60 minutes and 5 seconds

- The movie is released on Youtube in 720p with Stereo Sound, additionally to that, the movie is available for download featuring Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and 1440x1080 HD quality. The downloadable version is playable on a PS3 and should be playable on most other Blu-Ray and DVD players. I can be found below.

I apologizes that the downloadable version is not available today due to some unexpected errors with the upload, however, I hope to be able to make it available in the next two days, preferably tomorrow!

READ FOR THE BEST VIEWING EXPERIENCE:

Lets start this out by saying that watching this movie over Youtube is a perfectly fine way of watching this movie. The sound has been optimized to work within a stereo enviroment and while there is a noticable loss in the video quality, the quality loss is still within a very acceptable level. Keep in mind that the sound was optimized for headphones, so I suggest you use some high quality ones to watch this movie.

With said, the recommended way of watching this movie is by downloading the movie and watching it on your PC with headphones. That way, you get 100% out of the video quality and the sound quality. The biggest difference is that the downloadable version has a Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mixing, which greatly increases the quality of the audio. The gain in visual quality is also very noticable.

Also, there is the possibility of watching the downloaded movie on your television set. This is also a valid way of watching this movie, expecially seeing how the movie features Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. However, there are some shortcomings with this: Your television might screw around abit with the black/white contrast of the movie and on your 5.1 sound system, the music might not stand out as much as it would with headphones. However, while the movie was not primarily designed to be watched on a television, I tried my best to optimize the sound for it and the result is pretty good. I myself watched this movie several times already on my television set. While it has its shortcomings, watching a movie on a big screen on a couch always has another unique element to it.

Decide what option of viewing this movie suits you best.

With no further delay, heres the link! Enjoy!:

Im extremely excited to hear your thoughts on my movie! Feel free to state any sort of criticism!

Download (Thanks to InStarcraft.de):

The downloadable version is superior to the Youtube version in every way. Most notably, it features Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and also has a superior visual resolution, 1440 x 1080p HD to be exact. The movie is in a .m2ts format, which is a variation of the famous MPEG format and should run on most Computers and definately runs on a PS3 (and Blu-Ray players should also support it). The recommended way to watch it is to watch this version with Headphones on the PC, seeing how the movie has been optimized to be viewed in that way, however, the 5.1 Dolby Digital sound was additionally optimized to sound great on a actual 5.1 sound system, so watching it on a PS3 on your big TV is also a very great way to experience this movie!

However, seeing how the file is 6.4 GB big, it can be quite an obstacle to get the file on a PS3. However, it is possible to stream it onto your PS3 over you PC or to burn the file on a disk!

With no further delay, here is the downloadable version (The file is 6.4 GB big, so watch out!):

Update 12.21.2012

http://s7.directupload.net/images/121221/pk4wakee.png (http://www.directupload.net)

As promised, with the release of Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm beeing just around the corner, it is time for the release of another trailer. The final theatrical trailer for Starcraft: ROTS will go online this weekend on the 12.23.2012, which is this Sunday. If you liked the Teaser Trailer, I can assure you that this one will blow you away.

On the same day, I will also reveal the running time of the movie.

The full movie will be released in January 2013. I cant give you an exact date yet, however, it will definately be released in January.

Update 12.5.2012

http://s14.directupload.net/images/121205/baic7z9j.png (http://www.directupload.net)

Big news, everybody. While it took much longer then expected, the editing phase of Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm is finally completed now, infact, it has been completed for almost a month now. Currently im working on putting all the seperate scenes together, then I will be busy with mastering everything to make sure the movie sounds great both on 5.1 speakers and headphones and then rendering the movie. Also, I will do my best to add subtitles.

Now, the big question is: Will the movie still come out this year? I cant really answer that, however, it is a possibility. But please understand that these last steps are very important and I dont want to rush the movie in any way. However, if the movie doesnt go online in December, it will definately be released in January next year.

However, what I can say with 100% certainty is that the final trailer for Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm will be released this month. Be prepared.

Update 8.16.2012

A few new screencaps, this time protoss themed:

http://s7.directupload.net/images/120816/du5rb74j.png (http://www.directupload.net)

http://s1.directupload.net/images/120816/adre4ack.png (http://www.directupload.net)

http://s7.directupload.net/images/120816/tladnh9p.png (http://www.directupload.net)

Now that school is at it again, I unfortanly have less time to work on the movie, even though I still try to work on it daily.

As of now, I have alittlebit more than half of the movie editing, including some of the huge action scenes and I honestly have to say, everything comes together awesomely, probably even better than I expected.

Also, through the trailer, I recruited alot of great and talented voice actors to the team which really add to the movie with their outstanding performances. Because a machinima can look as good as it wants - at the end of the day, the machinima will still only look like a machinima. Its the job of the actors to bring that extra depth into the movie.

So, all in all, the movie is turning out amazing, even though it all takes alittle longer than expected.

Update 7.22.2012

Heres a new set of screencaps for you guys:

Currently im hard working on editing the movie as fast, but also as best as I can.

Update 6.23.2012

The time has finally come! The countdown is over and I proudly present you the Teaser Trailer for Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm! Im super excited to finally show this to everyone. Have fun! :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukkNRa5NubU

Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Additionally to that, this would be a good time to answer a few frequently asked questions about the movie:

Q: When is the movie going to be released?

A: It should only take 1 or 2 months to get the movie fully edited and all the missing voices recorded.

Q: Whats the running time?

A: Currently unknown, however, I think when finally edited the movie will be around 30 - 70 minutes long.

Q: When can we expect the next trailer?

A: In the next weeks.

Q: Is this related to Heart of the Swarm?

A: No.

Q: Will there be custom animation?

A: While very limited, there will be a few shots that will indeed feature custom animation. Custom animation is used to great effect in this movie and you will actually get a sneak peak at a custom animation shot in the trailer that will be released in the next weeks. Im sure it will blow your mind.

Q: How well does this movie tie in with the actual Starcraft 2 story?

A: In comparison to Starcraft 2, ROTS tells a very "small" story, focusing only on one of many attacks of the zerg around that time period. Seeing how the production on ROTS started in beta before any details about the SC2 story were released, the story of ROTS will be very seperate from the story we have seen in SC2. However, ROTS will not contradict anything we have seen in Starcraft 2.

The movie will begin just before the events of Starcraft 2 and will focus on one of the first full scale attack from the zerg on a terran planet since their four year long disappearance.

Most of the movie will be set on the attacked planet, "Cron II", which is controlled by the Umoja Protectorate, the second biggest Terran faction next to the Dominion. Cron II poses as a tactically important planet for the Protectorate, seeing how the planet is rich with giant mineral fields. However, as a desert planet, Cron II only provides rough living conditions, which causes it beeing populated mainly be miners and the marines to defend them.

Overall, Cron II is not ready to hold off a full scale Zerg attack on their own, so in an desperate act of seeking help, they send out a distress call into space - which is received by the Protoss mothership Tasiis.

Looks interesting. I shall look forward to it.
What kind of voice do you want for Sage and Shiloh?

Crainy
06-19-2012, 10:40 AM
Sage should mainly be a voice that has "integrity" to it. Shiloh I imagine should have a certain menace to it, seeing how he is a ghost and all.

However, the voice doesnt matter that much, what matters is that you have the ability to voice act. Wanna give it a try?

I would love to try a little bit of voice acting here, but I won't be able to record for another two or three weeks, due to lack of good equipment.

Secondly, my voice isn't really good for any "badass" parts. It sounds rather young, a little high (I am a teenager at 17, but it's no material for someone awesome). I could latch on to some minor characters, maybe.

PS- I love how all of the protoss are already taken :P

Do you actually need voice acting for the trailer or is all that done? I'd assume the latter but you never know with people these days...

I'd offer my hand at a Ghost but you're doing SCII, and it's unlikely that you want the high-quality Ghost sound effects in the background of the voice. Anything I record tends to be better than SCII's audio.

Would have done a(ll of the) Protoss, though.

You talking about unit click audio or in general. If the latter, I'd have to STRONGLY disagree, no matter how subpar SC2's audio was. Your work is great for an amateur, but don't get ahead of yourself.

I could do sound editing, though it'd work best if I were on a live call (Skype, Ventrilo, etc.) so I could make them do it again and again if their voice acting wasn't good enough.

Attached (http://sclegacy.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1991&stc=1&d=1340303451) is a sample of my Ghost voice acting.

Saying my voice acting is better than SCII's is not a large compliment. It's akin to saying that a seventeen-year-old amateur artist's work is better than that of a kindergartener's macaroni art.

Badass. Very nice quality.

I don't know if you've seen it already or not, but this thread (http://sclegacy.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13675&page=21) might help you a little bit for the scale of the units and battles.

Not necessary of course, but I feel like it would simply be that much better if the Ultralisks were giant, hulking monstrosities, instead of Hydralisk sized (as seen in the opening shot. It's also worth noting that Immortals are supposed to be a ways larger as well). I see that the Ultra is much larger in a later shot, but consistency is key :) The queen is also a teensy bit small.

Aside from the minor sizing issue (which is perfectly excusable, and I'm pretty sure most people don't care that much), it's great. However, I would love to hop on board as an editor (sound or otherwise). Most of the protoss voices are good, but I think I have something that can throw a little bit of flair onto them when I get to my desktop (2 weeks).

The majority of the voice acting in StarCraft 2 is fine. Very little of it annoyed me in terms of the actors reading the lines. The lines were pretty terrible but that's has nothing to do with the acting itself.

Your work, however great it is for an amateur, would grate on my nerves after hours if I had paid for it. Its top notch stuff but awkwardly unnatural sounding. No offense.

Then you may be tone-deaf, sir. The voice acting lacked emotion, depth, and character. Even the paid actors (as in, not interns reading lines statically off of a notepad) had a general lack of emotion. Tychus was the only passable voice in the whole game.

Considering the 20 dollar gaming mic I use and the horribly-loud computer and A/C unit that run in the background, I'm surprised you like my voice acting fidelity at all. The quality of the acting and edits had better be top-notch, though, for the acting experience I have and the audio programmes I use.

VAing in your trailer - especially Protoss - is lacking as I had expected, and the trailer could have used more length. I'll see about getting those Ghost lines in to you, though.

Well, theres not awhole lot of voice acting in that trailer (there is only protoss voice acting in that trailer, exept for 1 line). And the trailer is supposed to be only a teaser, so thats excuses the length. A bigger trailer will come around near the release of the movie.

And yeah, I noticed that the voice acting was off quite some time ago, which is why I made a recast of most of the voices and now, I got alot of near-professionals (like you) or even professionals to do some of the voices, which will help the movie out, gravely, which I greatly appreciate, because good voice acting does so much for a animated movie.

I like the fact that it's about the Umojans. That faction doesn't get enough love. What's the trailer music you used?

... I think I need to change my pants.

I've been a little skeptical of this project but this trailer has most definitely won me over. The only part I disliked was the rallying speech at 1:45; it's not delivered believably. Otherwise, amazing work. Also, is that Zerg Queen blocking a High Templar attack at 2:25? Shit's going down.

Thanks for the nice feedback :D

The trailer music is a unique mix of the following three songs: Megatrax - Birth Of Darkness, Pusher Music- Finish Line and Mark Petrie - Puma Punku.

- The movie is released on Youtube in 720p with Stereo Sound, additionally to that it will be available for download in the next days featuring Dolby Digital 5.1 sound and 1440x1080 HD quality. The downloadable version will be playable on a PS3 and should be playable on most other Blu-Ray and DVD players.

With said, the recommended way of watching this movie is by downloading the movie (once it is uploaded) and watching it on your PC with headphones.

That was awesome. Points for:
1) Good cinematography. With my own campaign I've generally avoided zooming in so close to everything because all the models are designed to be viewed from a top-down perspective. But with this, it looked great anyway.
2) I'm pretty sure I saw a bunch of stuff that's not possible in the editor, not counting post-processing effects. Did you add new animations yourself in 3d max?
2) Realistic unit sizes and damage. It was great seeing void rays & thor deal out the hurt. Colossus could have done more though.
3) Using the cloak animation for warp in/out instead of blizzard's regular "data" warp or whatever it is.
4) A serious story with people dieing. I like it.
5) Nice environments. Traveling through the warp matrix (phase prism portrait) and the mothership was awesome.
6) The intro with the immortal poking on the glass was amazing (the binary code scene didn't make much sense, but still a nice touch).
7) The zerg set up a trap. This is a perfect example of what should be expected from zerg intelligence.Minus points for:1) Need more dialog polishing. Subtitles sometimes didn't match what people said, a few grammar errors, and the protoss talk more like humans. i.e. "we must go quickly" instead of "we must make haste".
2) Occasional lore muff-up. I didn't buy the strength of queens. Thor was not a prototype weapon of the Dominion, it was made by Swann. The Kalath Intercession wasn't a civil war. Dominion ghosts are meant to be brainwashed/loyal: it seems strange that Shiloh would have defected so easily and not completed his orders without some more explanation. But given the general sorry state of StarCraft canon these days, I doubt anybody but me would care/notice.
3) I kind of didn't understand the logic behind not nuking the zerg base. Surely, even if the queens can be reincarnated (unconfirmed?), nuking the base would still be a good idea, no? Also, I don't see how a radio tower would have helped the protoss expand their warp network. I also wondered why Zhadun didn't just read Shiloh's mind and get the location of the artifact. Protoss aren't omniscient, as they don't intrude past surface thoughts, but once they know that something is up, mind-reading a terran should be well within their abilities.
Overall, an amazing piece of work. I am very impressed. Got any future projects planned?

First of all, thanks alot for the nice feedback.

Those are some excellent points. Let me address them:

First of all, thanks for praising the cinematography, Im always very proud of my cinematography myself and greatly appreciate it when people like it, too!

Alot of the stuff you have seen in the movie, expecially during the battle scenes, is not possible in the SC2 editor. Most of the movie was infact not made in the SC2 editor, but composed together in Sony Vegas. And yes, I and Ka3zone made a few custom animations for the movie.

Well, Collossus were actually doing the most damage, but it isnt as emphasised as much as with the others seeing how the scene was set up.

Glad that you liked the story. Also Im glad that you liked the intro. And yes, the binary code thing didnt make much sense, but was cool for sure.

Well, the Lore-muff ups were kind of to be expected, but there are actual several reasons for them: Some of the stuff I just changed so it made for a more interesting story (Ghosts beeing able to fear stuff and as such be pressured into revealing secrets and ofc the strength of the queens) and other stuff was different back when I wrote the script, like the thing about the Thor. In the description of the Thor on the Starcraft 2 site, the Thor was clearly a Dominion secret project. That was a screw up in the SC2 story that Blizzard even admitted.

Other stuff about the Kalath Intercession thing and Protoss beeing able to read minds I simply didnt know, however. Points to you :D However, arenīt Ghosts shielded against mind reading? I think I once red something like this on a SCwiki.

The thing about not nuking the hive of course doesnt make a whole lot of sense when you think about it, but it isnt supposed to. It was just a short line I included to quickly explain why they dont do that and give a reason for making the ending of the movie more exciting. Dont know if I have could have come up with a better way of pulling that off.

And yes, I have alot of other projects planned, some of which are also Starcraft 2 related! Be sure to keep an eye out for those!

I agree almost entirely with Gradius' review. A couple more points I would like to add.

Voice work was semi-professional level, around the quality of a B-movie. My favorite voice was definitely the Immortal on the mothership. That was one badass motherf*cker. For a fan made project with basically no funding, that's a success in my book.

Using the cloaking for warping in was a fantastic touch. Loved it.

Though the sizes were a nice touch, some of the units felt a little bit small. The Void Ray, the ultralisks, and the colossi are all examples of this.

I was hoping to see Shiloh be an asshat at the end and try to kill Zadun before the colossus were deployed, and I feel that a battle between the two (especially with cloaking and everything) would be a satisfying way to end his plotline.

Solid production, man. Keep up the good work.

Also, zealot models don't have necks :) Just found that out.

There are certainly some things that could be improved for a "Director's Cut," but overall it was very well done. Some re-takes of dialogue would be the best and easiest place to start.

A scene issue: Zhadun turns his back to Shiloh multiple times, even though Shiloh still has his gun because of his unit model. A line/scene with Zhadun telling Shiloh to empty his weapon rounds before asking where the artifact is would make much more sense... unless you want the viewer wondering when Shiloh is going to shoot Zhadun in the back as he's opening up the Colossi storage door :p

Edit: Fine, I'll hide it. But seriously, what kind of tool reads the thread before watching the video?

Downloadable version!

Hi Crainy here!

I can hardly believe its already been a week since Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm has been released. For two and a half years this movie was my pet project and releasing it for everyone to see was quite the experience! It has been a blast, I have been overwhelmed with all the positive feedback and the amout of views and likes the movie got. I honestly didnt expect the movie to get such positive feedback. To my surprise, expecially the story was very well received! Thanks alot, everyone :)

And yes, there will be more Starcraft 2 machinima content from me in the future! So keep an eye out for that!

As promised, the downloadable version of Starcraft: Rebirth of the Swarm is finally ready. Im sorry that its a week late, but its quite difficult to upload a file that big! The file is hosted by the InStarcraft.de, HUGE THANKS TO THOSE GUYS!

Additionally to that, there will be a commentary track out soon were I and some of the voice actors will commentate the movie and give insight into the production, address critisism and even give an outlook on future projects!

Download:

And the actual website:
